BEING OLDER DOESN’T HAVE TO BE WHAT IT USED TO BE
Phillip E. Collins
Researchers are starting to figure out why we do not have to
age as in the past. By studying thousands of people throughout America they
have some major suggestion as to how to more successfully age. Genetics being
key, what they focus upon is lifestyle that can hold genetics at bay. Seventy,
eighty and ninety can be the new fifty, sixty and seventy.
Within lifestyle it is essential that we are physically,
mentally, spiritually and emotionally active. Since change is all there is, it
important that we are willing to challenge ourselves through change. Having an
active social network and the stimulation of that interaction is key.
One of the major factors in aging is what happens with our
brains, they can actually shrink. It has been found those not treating
depression risk higher events of dementia. Staying focused in life by expressing yourself
intellectually and creatively are vital. We all have some gift and/or talent to
share with the world. And becoming older need not stop that sharing. This will
keep our cognitive abilities flowing.
Avoiding stress and realizing that most conflicts are not
our fight not only keep blood pressure down but make us nicer people.
Of course, we all know that diet is important throughout our
life and as we age what we need does change. A diet keyed to our age can not
only keep blood sugar down and brain function up but give us the necessary fuel
for the day. Those eating whole grains, veggies, leafy greens, nuts, berries,
and fish while reducing red meat and sweets are the healthiest of us as we age.
Research on your own what is the best diet for you.
Keeping energy flowing throughout our body effects not only
our bodies but can enhance our mood. Find an exercise that you enjoy without
over doing it. Let it not be a choice that you will move energy within you,
just do what you can at that moment and have gratitude for it. It might be just
a walk.
Many of us are refusing to surrender to just being old. We are fortunate to be living in an era where the above information is easily available to us and can insure that getting older can be the best it has ever been.
